Greenwood </div> </div> </div> <p>The McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica (MCM) forms one of the most extreme deserts on Earth. It consists of a mosaic of permanently ice-covered lakes, ephemeral streams, exposed soils, and glaciers. Microorganisms are the only life forms occupying these landscape units. Large Ad&eacute;lie colonies occur spatially in regions characterized by deep seafloor canyons. Comprehensive studies of treeline position have noted that ectomycorrhizal fungi may be an important factor delineating the boundary between forest and tundra. Yet, these critical plant-fungal symbioses are sensitive to wildfires. The NBII-LTER cooperative agreement is the result of efforts championed by W. Michener dating back to 2000.
