The Integrative Science for Society and Environment (ISSE) initiative and its working model for the interaction of ecosystems and social systems represent the product of tremendous investment by the LTER network and its scientists as part of the 20-year planning process. Researchers in the emerging field of sustainability science promote similar frameworks that fundamentally integrate economy, ecology, and equity. Building on the presentation of plenary speaker William Clark, a leading figure in sustainability science, this workshop will 1) compare and contrast the ISSE framework and existing sustainability science frameworks, asking how are they different and/or similar, and 2) develop a statement of how the objectives of sustainability science and education can be met using the power of long-term research and the LTER network. Ultimately, we hope this exercise will inform and stimulate greater interaction between the LTER network and the sustainability science community as we develop new, cross-site and network-scale research plans.
