Information infrastructure, a vital aspect to many contemporary scientific investigations, is in transition. A lifecycle model for digital data provides a framework for site-based information management. Together with relevant standards, the full data context –important to local and remote data repositories – is under development. We highlight selected subcycles and associated information management roles within the data lifecycle. In particular, a data analysis subcycle critical to data description efforts is explored at sites close to the data origin.
